In Malaysia, Reviews, Sleep

Boutique beachside resorts are one of our favorite things around here and we’re always looking for new ones. So earlier this month, I checked out The Kasturi, a 20-room resort on Malaysia’s east coast where most of the rooms are private pool villas. It’s a hard job, I know.

A little more than three hours drive from Kuala Lumpur, The Kasturi is off the tourist trail in the beach town of Cherating. The sleepy roads are dotted with restaurants and shops and the town’s main beach gets the occasional water sports enthusiast. Mangroves line a nearby river and in the evenings, fireflies light up the riverbanks. A nearby turtle sanctuary provides a safe place for turtles to hatch and throughout the European summer months, dozens of newborn turtles are released into the ocean daily. Spending an evening helping in the release and another one floating down the river watching fireflies is about as busy it gets in these parts. Which makes it an ideal spot for a restful end to a holiday.

Check out this video from my visit to see what the rooms at The Kasturi look like – trust me, they are lush. Warning: there may also be baby turtles.

The hotel will soon have a spa and the team are ace at arranging kayaking, a visit to the turtle sanctuary, or a chance to see the fireflies. Monkeys sometimes make an appearance so you might want to keep your doors closed at night!
